CAPS Manitoba Sommelier Certification Program
CAPS Manitoba is proud to announce that it will be offering the Association de la
Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) Level 2 examination, providing candidates in the
province with the opportunity to achieve this globally recognized certification locally.
The Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) Level 2 Certification self-study
program is an intermediate-level qualification designed for wine professionals seeking to
deepen their theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of the global wine
industry.
This program emphasizes comprehensive coverage of key wine-producing regions,
grape varieties, viticulture and vinification techniques, and the fundamentals of wine
service. It also introduces structured tasting methodologies aligned with international
sommelier standards, enhancing both analytical skills and sensory evaluation.
Delivered through independent study, the certification requires a high level of discipline
and self-motivation, allowing candidates to progress at their own pace while developing
industry-relevant expertise. The ASI Level 2 credential is internationally recognized and
serves as a strong foundation for advanced sommelier training and professional
development within hospitality and wine-related fields.
For format, list of competencies, calendar for ASI exams and more information, please
visit the ASI website here.
In addition to the examination, the program requires the completion of a 60-hour stage
component. The 60-hour stage component must be completed under the supervision of
a certified sommelier and may consist of a combination of event service and
restaurant-based experience. The supervising sommelier will be required to complete a
form attesting that all learning outcomes have been met to a satisfactory standard.
